The best way I've found to make hats with straight needles is to cast on however many stitches you plan on using. After having knitted about half the height of the hat, begin knitting three-five stitches together every row until you have 10 stitches left. Cast off, and then sew up the hat down the seam and turn inside out! I've made many hats very successfully as thus.

i think the only way to do a hat on straight needles would be to make it in the shape of a triangle.....picture this: knit a rectangle with long side the length of circumference of babies head. seam up the side.,..now you have a tube....thread a strand of yarn through the whole piece about two inches from the top and pull strands together....now it is cinched at the top of the head. hope that makse sense...this is a great website for free patterns:

i believe so which you may use any length needles you elect for the trend, as long as you employ an suitable length yarn for the needles, in spite of the undeniable fact that very large needles (US 10's and up) and cumbersome yarns could no longer be mushy for somewhat one to positioned on. 5's are no longer an particularly small needle, although, and could artwork for sport and DK weight yarns which artwork properly for toddler hats. remember that toddler's head isn't that vast, this is concerning the size of a grapefruit, so which you don't desire a large style of stitches, till you're utilising toddler yarn, to make a hat for them.
