Actually there IS a grandmother clock (honest! ).
It is classicly about 2/3's the size of the grand father clock (which are between 6 to 7 feet high) and the chimes are often higher.

It comes from the old song, "My grandfather's clock was to large for the shelf / So it stood ninety years on the floor." The song was written in 1876 and was extremely popular.
(There is another theory, but this one seems by far the best supported.)
