My friend's Jeep Commander is about a year old and she's had this happen several times now. When making a turn, occasionally the steering wheel locks and the car stalls out. In order to start her car again, she has to put the car in park. Her husband has taken it to the dealership and they ran diagnostics on the car and found nothing. Can anyone tell me what it could be? This could cause a serious accident one of these times and it's happening more frequently now.

Wow ebay, are you a mechanic? You're so insightful, "Its called auto-matic steering fluid. It goes in the car under the hood." Considering this happened the first time to her within a few months of purchasing a BRAND NEW CAR, I don't think it could be 'low' on fluids already. Something more is wrong there. Keep your snide remarks to yourself, thanks!

First off. This isn't a problem with any fluids like people are saying. At worst, no power steering fluid it would just make turning more stiff. This is a manufacturing error. I've heard this happening to others. They found nothing wrong because the computer won't pick it up and they're too lazy to look into it. DON'T DRIVE THE CAR! Call the dealership to come pick it up and fix the problem. If they refuse, call a lawyer and the Chrystler Corp. This is not a small problem. It could kill your friend or someone else and the Chrysler would be responsible.

it sounds like an ignition switch, actuator rod, keyed insert problem. diagnostic checks won't reveal it, it is a visual/ manual adjustment. when the key is turned to the run/start position a gear pulls a pin out of the steering wheel to unlock it. at the same time the gear pushes a rod down the steering column to make the electrical connections in a switch under the dashboard. without actually seeing it for myself, i have to guess, that the keyed insert that she turns the car on with, has a broken, or weak spring and is not holding the pin out of the steering wheel lock, and allowing the rod to turn the electrical switch to shut off. take it back to the dealer, tell the service manager to inspect the ignition switch system from the key to the electrical switch. if they don't fix it, complain to the owner of the jeep dealership, chrysler corp, the state dept. that regulates repairers, etc. if the dealer doesn't fix it try another dealer whose service manager will listen to her, look into the problem, and get it right. she should stop using the first dealer and use the one that fixes it for her, too. she may want to check and see if jeep has had any recalls for this problem. sorry for the run on sentences and not offering to check out recalls and such, I'm more hands on than computer geek. good luck, hope this explains it some for ya, and that she can get it fixed.

Go to another dealer or an independent garage and have the vehicle checked. This is very dangerous. Contact the Federal Trade Commission and Highway Safety people and report the problem. Call Chrysler Customer Service and report the problem. Write letters so there is a record of everything, keep copies. Good luck.

Has the car got one of those new-fangled keyless start systems? I bet that's faulty and the car thinks it's been shut off therefore locking the wheel and turning off the engine. Whatever it is it's highly dangerous - I'd get the dealer to sort it ASAP. You don't want the wheel locking during a high-speed corner!

heaving it put on the computer wouldn't show why the steering is locking up she needs to have the front end checked out as for the car stalling could be something shorting out when she turns the wheel good luck

Take it back to an authorized dealer and have them go through. Have them get the service rep involved. If they do not do this email Daimler directly and get in contact with a department of transport rep. This is a safety issue and should not be waved off.

In order to turn a vehical with ease, most use a power steering pump that runs off your engine.

If something is wrong with that pump, it will rob alot of power and eventually overwhelm the motor and stall it.

Its called auto-matic steering fluid. It goes in the car under the hood. There is nothing else wrong, it just need to be "oiled" so to speak.
