I need to drive to Lexington, KY for a college interview and while I know that Lexington isn't nearly as big as some other major cities, their drivers scare the crap out of me!
Who else is freaked out by driving in congested cities?

I use to be... I grew up driving in Oklahoma but then moved to Boston, MA and had to learn to drive all over again. It can be scary at first but remember to breath, take your time and the right lane is for slower drivers.... :-) Good luck and I am sure you will do fine.

I've been driving for 30 years and I hate driving in the city. The best thing you can do is get out the map and know exactly how to get there. Have two or three different routes. You need to be more aggresive than normal, if you wait for someone to let you change lanes you'll wait forever. Turn off the radio and crack your window so you can hear. Make sure your windows are sparkly clean and you have washer fluid. Leave yourself plenty of time so you get there early enough to drive around and find a good parking spot. That might take a half hour by itself. Watch for pedestrians, in cities they're like headless chickens. I have to drive in Toronto, the fourth or fifth biggest city in North America, and it's brutal. Keep calm and confident and you'll do fine. Good luck with your interview.
P.S. keep your doors locked!

you'll be okay.
I'm from a big city, and now I live in a smaller town so I have the
opposite problem; I get totally bugged out by driving in the middle
of nowhere; i get paranoid like "if i break down, im nowhere near
civilization".
Basically, drive defensivly, and just keep your eyes peeled. You'll be fine, Im from the NorthEast and i assure you, driving in Lexington is a walk in the park compared to how new yorkers
drive.

Oh I love driving in NYC! But there are plenty of other ways to get around in NYC because there are a lot of people out there who doesn't care to drive in the city. Also, parking can be an issue too.

when i first started driving, i had a stick shift pick-up truck, and i drove it into the city (Chicago, a REAL big city) to go to the museum. i was so flustered with all the traffic and pedestrians, who will walk right in front of moving cars (!!), that i kept killing the engine and having to start it again.... not fun, not fun....
but, now a days, with more driving experience and actually KNOWING my way through the streets (oh, and no longer driving a truck ; ) it is much easier. you just get used to driving thisclose to other cars...good luck!

it really use to...
but, we have to drive 1500 miles to get home when we visit family and go through major cities...
i have found the more i do it, the less i am scared... just focus on the road and the lane you are in... just relax ( i know it's easier said than done) but it just takes practice...

and ignore the azzwipes that flash you and honk at you... they are the sleepwalkers that are speeding and might get a ticket... they have all had to learn to drive in big cities bf too...

I used to be, but I used to drive thru NYC, and there are a lot of idiots driving there and I never got into an accident so I guess you can say that drivers don't scare me too much.

a place like rand mcnally can give you directions and usually tell you which exit you need and which way you exit and turn there after, print out some detailed maps and figure out what street comes right before the one you need. sometimes the street signs are too small and by the time you see them it is too late. allow plenty of time and you will be fine. try to avoid rush hour if possible

I live just outside of Washington DC and the traffic is horrible no matter where you go. You just have to take it easy and drive defensively if you are not comfortable. Plan your trip and find the right radio station where traffic reports are announced on a regular basis.

You'll be fine.

No, I was born and raised in big cities, so I am use to the driving. I can understand why you are scared though. Try to relax, (easier said than done) YOu will do fine!
