A congressman convicted of a felony and sent to jail is still eligible for their congressional pension when they get out. I was watching CNN last night and they said the Dems were pushing through a bill that would take way your pension if you were convicted of a felony. My question is, why the hell was this not done sooner? That's ridiculous that you could be sent to jail and receive your pension when you get out.

Actually, if you research, it isn't just the Democrats that are pushing this.

This same thing was actually passed in 2006 by the 109th Congress (legislation introduced by Mark Kirk (R-Ill.), and helped passed by Bob Ney himself. And a similar measure passed the House in 1996.

They have been trying for quite some time to get this changed.

EDIT: In fact, the Democrats have trimmed the bill down to only include 4 felonies. The Republican bill included 21 felonies that would cause pensions to be stripped. Can't we go this far?

I agree. If you get kicked out of the military you lose your pension, likewise if I get fired from my job even if I don't go to jail I don't get a pension. IMO if a politician gets canned after his first term and doesn't get reelected isn't that the same as being fired? Why would someone who gets fire after 4 years get a pension?

Why wasn't it done sooner? Like back in the Clinton era? And what other bills do they plan on sliding in with this one?! So far they all seem to have attachments that end up denying someone else a right.

This is true in the private sector as well. Hell, even a rapist like Big Bill gets a pension even after an Impeachment!

Wow, I actually agree with the Dems!

I also agree with the bill they passed outlawing lobbying. It's funny that only one guy voted against it, I guess he won' be re-elected...

Why should anyone not receive money that they earned?

I don't understand your logic.

If the person who commits a felony does his or her time, serves their sentence, why take their money away also?
