perhaps this isn't relevant but Britain is the only country in the world that sees education as an annoyance rather than an opportunity !

Hello..... "Yank" here......
Thank you for your nice comments on our education. The government tries to provide the best education possible for every American child. Mostly educational issues fall down to the state government. In New Jersey (NJ) there is an act entitled "The No Child Left Behind Act" this makes sure that each child passes through all grades and if the student shows the initiative the government gives money for college. Our homework load is pretty intense too, I get typically seven to eight hours of homework each night. At this point this is done to prepare us for college.
The teachers are also very well educated, my Honors British Literature teacher was born and raised in England (somewhere around Stafford) and went to Oxford. So he can really liven up the class (which is especially hard to do at 7:20 in the morning)
I have also heard a lot of positive things about the education system in England. Many of our universities and colleges international students come from the UK, so great job to England too!
Enjoy the rest of your week,
C. Clark

American education system is shite compared to here in the UK.
Seriously we had an American Lecturer at Uni and he admitted that essays and papers which got an "A" Grade in American Colleges would be lucky to scrape a "D-" in British Universities. Hence half the people in America who have degrees apparently don't deserve them.
Plus they spend to much time going on about how great America is, Pilgrim Fathers, War or Independence, Constitution etc and not enough on finding out about the world TODAY. Thats why a lot of Americans are really ignorant about other countries and current events.

They don't 'brainwash the nation' but you're absolutely right. America is very inward looking and thus the prejudice and narrow-mindedness. And for that, I am ashamed. I am an American, and I agree with you. They definitely need to fix up the education a bit as to not making it look as if we're the center of the universe. I just hope you don't judge us all like that. =(ãBut on the whole, I think American schools are very good, and I agree with Christine.

the educational tradition in the U.S. is unparalleled. the U.S. has always abided by the mantra "land of opportunity" and education is a cornerstone of that principle. for centuries the nation has committed enormous resources, both private and public, to create a phenomenal educational infrastructure. granted many of our citizens don't benefit from it, but the top 10 percent certainly do and it shows.

ladymoonlight, have you considered the possibility that your American lecturer was ingratiating himself with his audience?
