1. Toyota Corolla, buy up to 200,000 miles if well-maintained
2. Honda Civic or Accord, buy up to 160,000 if well-maintained
3. Nissan Altima, buy up to 125,000 if well-maintained
By well maintained, I mean oil changes on schedule and other regular maintenance.
If you have more money to spend, a used Toyota Camry is a super investment...truly an outstanding vehicle.

Well, honda gets the most miles per gallon on average, I would say get a civic 4 cylinder 2 liter, and if you really want to save gas, get the standard tranny, automatic will tare up the motor and while with the standard you can run the motor at a much lower rpm than an auto!!!

I'd go with the automatic, as a manual might have been abused to teach someone how to drive.
Hyundai or Mitsubishi '02 or later will save you money vs Toyota or Honda.
Overall look at the number of miles per year. See if you can find one at 15k per year or less.

The best used car is the cheapest Toyota or Honda you can afford. My fav is the one I just got: a 1991 Mazda B2600i 2wd extra cab pick up. Great vehicle!

Personally I would stay away from Honda or Toy's. They crap! People just like to agree with others about stuff. I would go with a Hyundai Sonata. They're great cars with plenty of room and great mileage. And they have better warranties then Honda's or Toy's.

I would say the Honda Civic or Toyota Corolla would be good bets. I wouldn't buy a car with more than 60,000 milies on it but that's just me.
