Well I'm not a pro on the subject but I do know that its possible. My husband and I come from families with blonde as dominate. We are both blonde so we thought we would have a blond baby. Well until he came out. My son was born with red hair.
My husband's grandmother's mother had red hair. That making it my son's great great grandmother. We couldn't trace it to anyone else in the family tree.
So yes, it is possible.

Yes, they can go that far back. They don't get "weaker" as generations go, its just that you have to have two of the recessive gene in order for it to present, so you could be carrying one and the dominate gene is the one that presents. So if your partner also carrys the recessive gene, there is a chance it could present in your children.

Recessive genes can go back even further than that without being expressed. They would just need the right genes on both sides to express themselves.

That's definitly not too far back, i have red hair because of a great grandmother, she was the only other red head in my entire family and even after all the other babies born into my family since (i'm now 26) I'm still the only living red head :)

The short answer is yes.
The long answer is that the genes are passed from generation. Your genes came from your parents. Theirs from their parents. Therefore your genes came from your grandparents. Furthermore, your grandparents genes came from their parents and it goes on and on.
