Personally. I have long believed it to be representative of Forrest's memories... and that life is fleeting, fragile enough to be blown away, yet delicate enough to float.
Sitting here thinking of it some i am begining to wonder if it were more about Forrest being "touched" by something other, thus making him a truly special individual, to have lived the life he tells us.
I hope you get my meaning.

In my opinion, it is the randomness of life. That we are all just feathers in the wind and we blow where our destiny takes us. Remember that in the beginning of the movie, the feather was blowing and at the end of the movie, big Forrest was with little Forrest and they had come full circle. Forrest's whole life was a series of incredible events. Synchronicity. He just happened to be standing in the right place at the right time. No planning on his part. He was not trying to do all the things he did. They just... happened. Like the feather blowing in the wind.

I can't remember that film entirely but I normally associate white feathers with the presence of angels, so maybe Forrest had a special someone looking out for him

White feathers used to be given to conscientious objectors during the war as a sign of cowardice. Though, as Gump goes to war, I'm not sure if that's relevant.
Did you ever see the Simpsons episode where they're parodying Forrest Gump and the white feather keep stabbing Homer in the eye? Classic.

Forrest Gump's life could easily be represented by the feather... Forrest was not intentionally going in any direction in life, he just wound up where ever the winds of fate took him.

How lovely ! I've always believed a white feather is a sign that your Guardian Angel is about and looking out for you - several ?- very very lucky to be loved and potected by so many Angels ( unless , of course, there's a hole in the pilow !)

Hmmm, good question. Maybe it's to show some kind of symbolism of the continuity of life; the flying feather appears at both the beginning and the end of the movie.

I think it's a symbol of the innocence of this poor child growing up in a screwed up world. He put it in his little book when he was a puppy, grew up and made himself a life when the world tried to stop him. And at the end, he's still the same innocent, naive guy that we all should be. I think it also shows that love, peace and trust really does prevail over the passage of time.
I love that movie. I also love analyzing things like that.

i love that movie! to me it was about courage and it followed him throughout the movie so the feather was having the same journey as forrest and also i feel feathers like birds represent freedom-forrest was protect by his mother but he was so low in intelligence that he was able to do things that "normal" people wouldnt do so in essence he may have had more freedom

it could symbolize the significance of Forrest's life and how intricately it intertwined with others. he touched so many people's lives even though he was perceived by some as being slow or retarded. I love that movie, it came out when i was in a very difficult place in my life and helped pull me through.
