what causes a miscarriage at 23 weeks? if the baby is very small, or not developing right, could the baby come out by itself like a normal miscarriage? or what do they do at the hospital? a D&C? has anyone had this happen?

If your baby dies inutero after 20 weeks, it's considered a stillbirth, not miscarriage. At which time, you could either have a D & E (dilatation and extraction), you couldn't have a d&c (dilatation & cutterage) because there's too much "mass" of the baby OR you could put into labor (if your body doesn't do it on its own) and deliver your baby. Most times, they will encourage you to deliver the baby. And if you do deliver your child, in MOST CASES (like somewhere in the 90%s I'd guess) there's no reason for a D&C after to "clean you out". It's no different than delivering a healthy full term baby. MOST women who deliver babies do not a need a D&C after, your body knows what to do.

I'm so sorry if this is something you are actually going thru. A good friend of mine lost her baby at 38 wks and delivered her and held her and kissed her goodbye. As sad as the experience was, I know she was very happy to be able to see her.

On a side note to an earlier answerer: Abortion IS legal at ALL STAGES of pregnancy in the US, if you're curious about this look up the phrase "Partial Birth Abortion", there have been a lot of attempts to outlaw this gruesome procedure but it goes on every single day in the US and legally.

Miscarriage At 23 Weeks

At 23 weeks I think that you would have to go through the whole labor part and then go from there. After week 20 it is not consistered a micarriage it is considered a premature baby. And then you would have to talk to your doctor. Your cervix could open prematurely, the placenta could be ripping away from the uterus, and there are upteen other things that could cause a baby to be born to early or still born. I hope this helps and if something was to happen and you couldn't pay or the funeral, I know in NC the funeral home will not charge for a baby under the age of one. Good Luck.

It's not called a miscarriage at that point. It's stillborn.

You have to deliver the fetus and placenta - it's not as easy as a d&c at this point.

There are lots of reasons why this could happen, but most likely the baby just wasn't developing properly. It usually doesn't happen just because the baby is very small.

My cousin had a miscarriage at 20, but after 20 weeks it is called pre-trem deleivery. For my cousin the baby was found dead in side of her, from a prenatal check, they found no heartbeat. They put her in labor and she only had to dilated to like 4-5 cm. The had to push the baby out like normal. The baby looked like a baby just she could hold him in her hand. It was a sad thing to happen, as it is very rare. I haven't heard this happen of anyone else that I know. Yes they should do a d&c to clean you out but I can't remember if she did. I am really sorry for your sistuation.

At 23 weeks you'd be induced and you'd have to deliver :( it's very very sad.

A late miscarriage can happen for a number of reasons; trauma, umbilical cord anomalies, IUGR (interuterine growth restriction), poor lifestyle choices (cigarettes, alcohol, drugs, and other abuse to the mother's body), and of course genetic defects

My mother delivered my brother at 23 weeks. He was 1lb , translucent and could fit in the palm of your hand. He spent 4 months in the hospital and is now 17 years old.

I'm sorry if you or someone you know had a stillborn.

23 Weeks is too late for a miscarriage and it would be called a stillborn. You would actually have to give birth to it. I can't imagine what a mother would go through. So sad.

Usually you have to go through labor when you have a misacarraie this late and it is usually known a stillborn becuas sometimes a baby can survive this early wiht proper medical care. it is a fully formed baby that i approx 11 inches long by now and almost a pound so it could not just fall out
