Applications software, what we normally think of computer programs, often use (or process) information (“data”) to produce desired results. Occasionally the incoming data is a simple request to retrieve information. For example, someone making an inquiry to Wikipedia. Other times the software takes the incoming data and stores it. In this example, someone else supplies Wikipedia with information which it places in its database.

Although it works the same way internally, the term “word processing” is sometimes used to distinguish the two. For example, large corporations that are organized with Data Processing and separate Word Processing departments.

The term "data processing" has been used for many years in the computer industry. Most people I know say "data processing" when they are referring to old-fashioned applications like banks using "data" read from checks to update "data" in someone's bank account.
