The predicted end of the earth is every year.
No, really, the end of the earth is always being predicted by some nut or another, and they're always wrong. Here's a list of end-of-the-earth predictions through history. There are pages of them, you have to keep hitting the Next icon (a hand) at the bottom):

KK i've been meaning to say this for a long time now. The only reason people think the world is going to end on December 21, 2012 is because when the Mayans were making their calendar, they ran out of room and the last date was that date. They did not bother continuing on, so they just kept it like that, striking a huge controversy on whether or not the world's ending. They had believed they were in the fifth era of the world and that it was going to end shortly. But as you all know, that is not possible. So when they were making their calendar they ran out of space, signifying the possible date when "the world was going to end." That is why.

Talk to any cult and there are thousands of them you'll probably get an answer of about once a week until the foreseeable future. I think the Heaven's Gate were the last famous ones when Comet Hale-Bopp was destroying the earth in the late 90's. By the way the calendar I got at Barnes & Noble runs out in February 2008. Is that the end of the world ?

There are a lot of predictions about how and when the Earth will "die". Some scientists predict in a few hundred million years, the sun will die (all stars die, eventually), and thus, Earth will either be incinerated from the blast, or every living thing will eventually cease to exist because we're all dependent on sunlight to survive.
It doesn't really matter though - if you think about it, after a few millions years of further evolution and technological advancement, we won't even be on Earth anymore. The resources will all have been long spent by then, and we'll have advanced solely to space travel and planetary colonization.
The Earth will just be a distant memory of where all human life (as we know it) started. And who knows - personally I think in a few million years we'll all have evolved to look like what we know today as "Aliens". Advanced space suits, incredibly enhanced mental and visual capabilities would enlarge our brains, our eyes, and our mental abilities over these millions of years of evolution - we'll probably look a lot like extra-terrestrials, because we will in fact be extra-terrestrial, aka, space bound. ;)

To tell you the truth, we probably will never know when the real end of the world will happen. Christians believe that many events such as the Anti-Christ will appear, etc. I have a feeling that the start of the end will happen when we're off guard. Sure there's a lot of things going to happen soon (possible nuclear war, asteriod in 2030s, worse weather patterns, etc). All I can say is the worse is coming and everyone could feel it but won't say anything. Another thing is that Tom Cruise says he's the Christ of Scientology... which in the bible says there's going to be a lot of false prophets (not cool). Some dude around my area got on the news saying he's the Messiah and all.
Just follow your heart and don't give up hope when all goes down the hole... literally lol.

I would refer you to the Internet Site "Space dot Com". A
recent article there discusses the eventual breakup of the Moon
into a dust and debris cloud in about 4 billion years. My guess
is that somewhere along in that period, life on Earth will cease to exist. Space Dot Com has many interesting pictures and educational material about Astronomy and the Universe which might be helpful to you in understanding Earth's position in the scheme of things.

Mayan calendar date does not predict the 'end' of the earth. . . it only 'stops' - big difference.

The end of the earth will probably be in about 5 billion years when the sun runs out of hydrogen.
