It depends on what type of compound. If it is covalent then it is a molecule. If it is ionic then it is a unit cell.
With NaCl, ionic,the Na+'s are attracted to Cl-'s all around it and the Cl- 's are surrounded by Na+'s

Hey I think you are kidding but even though I wanna say about this.
A smallest particle of an element is called atom but in the case of a compund the smallest particle is called as molecule since it has all the atoms of its constituents in the proportion or ratio. If you are not satisfied please send me a message at verticle_axis@yahoo.co.in

It is indeed an atom. A water molecule is composed of 2 Hydrogen atoms and 1 Oxygen atom.

IT IS THE MOLECULE . If you decompose the molecules in its atomes or smaller contituants, the nature of the compound changes.
