You know, I had an ultrasound at 20 weeks, and again at 24 weeks, and for the first one, I was told to have a full bladder prior to coming in -- specifically, to drink 36 oz (!!!) of water within an hour of my appointment.
So, I did...and was incredibly uncomfortable (as any pregnant or once-pregnant women will understand perfectly) for that entire hour. I was sitting in the waiting room for 20 minutes, shifting around, trying to hold it in, and when I was called in, I was lying down, with the technician pressing and prodding on my lower abdomen, trying to get my baby to move.
....Ohhh....I felt like I would explode!
To make it worse, the technician eventually noticed my discomfort, and said, "Oh, is your bladder full?"
"Uhh...Yeah, pretty much."
"Oh, that's unnecessary -- go ahead and empty it! It'll probably make it easier to see the baby, too."
Oh, god...I was so relieved...
Anyways, my point is, DON'T fill your bladder unless you are specifically told to -- it is not worth the discomfort otherwise! (and, as per my story, it may be unnecessary even if you ARE told to!)

Drink 8 oz of water right before going in,just make sure your bladder is full..your bladder sits underneath your uterus and when your bladder is full it pushes the uterus upwards and out which makes a clearer picture for the u/s technician...U can also try drinking some chocolate milk or some soda right before going in,,just to get a good look at an active baby...I remember with my last pregnancy if i didnt feel my baby move for a while i would drink chocolate milk or something sweet and strong and that would make my baby move around a lot...It wont hurt nothing,..good luck!

Well, I know every baby is different. But all I did was drink 1 glass of water before I went in for my 20 week ultrasound. My baby was ALL over the place. They were sucking their thumb, I got to see the sex, the lips, nose, etc. I can't promised your baby will do this, but at this point I'm sure your baby will be easy to see. Congrats and I hope you get great ultrasound pictures. I got 4 and I love them. :)

Drink a glass of Cold OJ like 20 min. before you go in. I did this and my baby was all over the place! Sadly we still couldn't get a clear picture of the babies sex. I had to have a full bladder when I had my daughter, which was 3 years ago. When I went in for my ultrasound this time around, they told me to empty my bladder. They said that a full bladder helps them see better in the lower regions of the baby, but it prevents them from getting a better view of everything in the Northern regions.

Y'know, it's funny, I've never had a full bladder for my ultrasounds, and we can always see the baby just fine. She's not always in position for a good picture, but we can see her. My baby moves the most after I eat, or after I drink something cold. She also moves when I go to bed because of the position change.
If the baby isn't very active on it's own, your tech might prod your belly a little to try to antagonize the baby into moving. Don't worry, it's not painful and it won't hurt the baby. (They did this to me at my very first appt. in order to get the measurements they needed and my husband told me afterwards that he had to remind himself that Baby wasn't being hurt. He had subconsciously gone into protective Daddy mode and was refraining from yelling at her for 1) prodding me like that and 2) knocking around the baby!)

The tech asked me if I drunk orange juice before coming in for ultrasound, because my baby was all over the place! I didn't drink any, but she said that hypes him up.
Both previous ultrasounds I've had my baby has been very active. I think just the pressure of the ultrasound stick thing against my belly makes him squirm everywhere. TOO CUTE! :)
Have fun !!

Someone suggested to me that when you drink your water, drink half of it in a sugary drink (Coke, Orange Juice, etc) to make the baby more active. I'm not sure if you know the sex (or want to) but I took the advice with my youngest and she was just wiggling all around and we found out she was a beautiful little girl! GOOD LUCK!
Also, call the hospital ahead of time and ask if you bring in a videotape if they'll tape the U/S for you!

Have a glass of orange juice 15 mins before you go in :)
Stay away from anything with caffiene, your baby will get super active in the car ride there then pass out cold for the whole show!
