Will it interfere with the phone/electric/cable maintenance on the pole? If it's intentionally trained to grow on the pole, will I be responsible for it?

Some forms of ivy will grow anywhere like up an eavestrough on the side of my house, where the ivy adheres right to the brick so i don't see why it wouldn't grow on a telephone pole. Is it legal, probably not but ivy is hard to control and if it is around a pole like a telephone pole it will climb regardless of whether you wanted it to or not. Let the telephone company cut it back if it bothers them. Once it reaches the top it will definitely become a major problem and if they think you caused it they could charge you with the price of the cut back.

Technically speaking, the pole belongs to the phone company - even if it is on your property. Having said that - I personally would rather have a pole covered in ivy - I think it would look nicer.

I think you can make the ivy grow on the pole without actually being "responsible" for it - instead of running lies up the pole for the ivy to grab, tie a few fishing lines around the pole only add two at a time as the ivy grows and remove the previous lines as it gets higher. This way it'll lokk as if the ivy took off on it's own.

Ivy is invasive, and I doubt very much that the phone company would allow it to be grown on the pole. If the pole is of is wooden which most poles are here, then it is possible for it to get into the cracks as the pole ages and cause deterioration. I would check with the phone company before planting.

Thats such an interesting question!I don't know the answer, but I do know; Pole maintenance companies remove or ground cut plants that will cause future problems. Poles are inspected at least once every three years. So if you plant it's unlikely your vines will get big enough to cause a problem before the pole guys whack em. ( Unless you grow some Kudzu!)

Don't do it. It is not yours.

Ivy is very invasive once it is established. It will get into any crack. My mom had some that made their way into her basement through a wire hole, entered her electrical box! Quite the mess.

Spend your money on something lovely for your garden.

You can always check with the phone company but probably a not too invasive vine would be ok.
