I'm gonna draw one for my homework, and I was just wondering what it's called. If anyone knows any good examples, that'd be cool if you recommend one.

Generally their called "illuminated initials", but if the drawing includes a person, particularly that illustrates either a historical figure or a part of a story, they are called "historated initials."

There are several different styles, ranging from the knot work of the Book of Kells and Lindisfarne Gospel, to the often historated, or animal-filled versions of Romanesque Manuscripts, to the floral versions of later 14th & 15th century manuscripts.

Dover Books has a good reference cd-rom and book of Illuminated Initials on their bookstore website:

Sometimes Barnes and Noble carries a good selection of the Dover Publications.
