The CPU speed on my Gateway Solo 5300 laptop goes from 750 MHZ to 600 MHZ when I unplug it. How do I prevent this from happening. I went into BIOS but found no settings that would allow me to make any changes.

You can try this: A simple quick fix if you want to run at full speed on battery is to : just Hibernate your
laptop and before pushing power button to power back up, just unplug power supply and you will be running at full speed.Works on my Emachine

it's a setting on the processor that allow the computer to go into power saving mode on batteries. This is normal. When you need extra speed, it'll throttle back up to full speed.

Intel started adding this feature on older pentiums to give longer battery life. It's up to each manufacturer whether to enable it or not.

this is probably a powersaving modus, when you need the extra speed it will give it to you, no need to change anything.
