There is little difference in who does oil changes as long as quality oil and filters are used. Both Mercedes and BMW have computers that have service warnings that need to be reset and this alone could force you to the dealer. I asked how to reset mine here in this forum and have done it myself for some time now. My philosophy is oil is oil and a name brand filter is the same as a dealership filter. The difference in price is staggering. My Mercedes dealer wanted $280.00 for a minor service which was a glorified oil change. I did it including the computer reset for $40.00.

You don't have to get your car serviced at the dealership. You do need to keep receipts for all work done so that you have proof of maintenance for warranty work, however.
Find a good independent German/European garage. Almost every city has one. Their shop rates will be far below the dealer's, and many of their technicians used to work for the dealer. Many will specialize, as mine does (Mercedes and BMW). These guys can perform all your maintenance work, as per the book, and document it for the warranty. Ask other BMW owners where they service their cars, or go to a used dealer that sells a lot of BMWs and ask who does their work.

some times a group of mechanics that work for dealers got" fire."
some times they open BMW 's auto services.
some times You get services half the price.
PS if that's not Your case. then take to the dealer for oil change, be friendly with the techs, and (low voice) ask who make out side jobs.?

my brother owns a BMW , the reason he bought this BMW was the maintenance log for this car was stamped by the dealer every time it was serviced hence proof that this car is the best car at trade in or resale. this really counts , if you want the toy it pays to keep your investment serviced by BMW. good money saves money.
