I think the Narrator was Edgar Allen Poe. The story probably came to him in one of his paranoid alcoholic schizophrenic dreams.
It wouldn't be too far fetched for this to be true, as many writers get up from dreams and write them down for later use. That on top of the fact that the Narrator in "The Tell Tale Heart" is clearly paranoid and delusional to a haunted extent and a good writer. It has to be Edgar!

"The Tell-Tale Heart" is a wonderful read! And Edger Allen Poe was nor physco, he was odd yes but not physco. The story is all about what you mind can make us do as humans. He is determined to kill this man. And once he does and hides him under the floor boards he can't control the guilt enough 2 sit and have a coversation w/ police. Guilt is a very powerful thing and if you read much of Poes work you'll relize that most is about things that eat at one mind. He was a very gifted man, no matter how odd!

Edgar Allan Poe was a genius that instead of writing horror tales based on common fears started to explore the fears and angers that only the human psyche could bring to reality. There's no more powerful tool to create scary situations that "have to be fronted" than our brain. He was an alcoholist but not in the way we think today, when he was a baby his nanny used to made him faint using a cloth wet with gin or rhum just to force his sleep or to avoid him to listen to his parents quarreling. So when he grew up it was enough a small glass of gin to make him fly in a limbo made of fears and anguish.. luckily he was so smart and analytic that he was able to select and create artistic writings with these nightmares. If you read more of his works you will be astonished about his writing technique and his ability to give you the creeps with such simple human elements that our everyday-graphic-violence has almost totally annihilated.

Edgar Allen Poe was an alcoholic. He may have seen pink elephants at times from DTs.Over time alcoholics can develop a form of dementia called Korsakov's psychosis.

You would certainly have to be wrong in the head to kill a man because you didn't like his eyes.
