Does anyone else's heat pump kick off and on during the furnace cycle? Does it sometimes sound like it is pulling too much electricity?

It will turn off even though the thermostat setting has not been reached in order to de-ice the outdoor coil.

here's an article...

You said during the furnace cycle. Does this mean the gas furnace comes on and the heat pump turns off? Or, are you saying heating cycle and calling it furnace cycle? A heat pump will turn off when the home reaches the desired temperature. If the hp has a low refrigerant charge (or one of MAY other possible problems) it will cycle on and off due to safety controls operating. In this case you need a service person. If, at times the noise sounds straining or loud, it could have went into the defrost cycle which is normal. I hope you are warm!

Heat Pumps can be very complex. They have safety controls for refrigerant pressures that can short cycle the unit. It also should have controls to initiate the defrost cycle that may need checked. First, check your air filter to ensure that it is clean. Nothing is more humiliating that paying a tech to find a dirty filter. If that does not help, call someone qualified to service heat pumps. Dont be affraid to request someone with experience to save you time and money. I have 14 years experience, hope this helps!

Heat pumps suck!!! I have one and I hate it. More problems than they are worth. They don't even work when the temperature gets below 35. When mine goes out, I will replace it with a regular unit.
