This might be a dumb queston but anyway: I've just upgraded my account from trial to full and still cannot create draenei or blood elf, the icons in the new character selection screen are grey. Anyone had the same problem?

Depending on a few things, you won't be able to create new characters.
A. If you are on a new server, you are not allowed to create ANY new toons for a period of 1-2 weeks to avoid name issues and others during character transfers
B. If the server you are on is too full, new character creation can be stopped for temporary reasons.
C. If you've already created 10 toons, you are not allowed to create more on that server.
D. You never bought the expansion and the Draenei and B.E.s aren't available to you. <-----This is what your issue is

In order to play the new races and be able to enter the new expansion areas you will need the Burning Crusade expansion. If you purchased the $19.99 initial release then that will allow you to continue playing the base game, but as with many other MMORPGs you need to purchase the expansion to gain access to any new content that has been added to the game in the expansion.
The Blood Elves and Draenei are new races added in the Burning Crusade expansion. The flying mounts and areas through the portal are expansion areas that were also added.

You MUST buy the new expansion game,
World of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade
Once you have that you can play as Blood Elves and Draenei.

You may be on a new server that is not 'live' for new character creation.
Do this- go to Cenarion Circle server (or another server that is presently allowing free character migrations to load balance the servers), create a Dranei or BE, level one.
Go to the WoW website, go to Account Management, Character Move- and follow the steps to move your newbie to the server you wish to be on.
You will need to do some research on which server allows free migrations to which servers. Cenarion Circle allows transfers to Farstriders RP server only presently.

You have to have the expansion. Once you get the expansion and upload it, you have to go to www.worldofwarcraft.com to upgrade your account. If you already did all that, your server might be too full and the creation of new characters might be temporary down.

You could find a public realm that may be like that but not On blizzards sever. But you don't need them to play on blizzards server you can only get up to lvl 70 tho.

You have to buy the expansion, and then all new content will be available for you. I highly reccommend dropping the $40 on it, it is awesome. (Don't buy it on Ebay, if your local store is sold out try online stores, or wait)
