This engine should have a plug in one of the plug holes. The side hole was designed for a compression release that is not needed.Set the points(older model)s)at 12 to 14 Thousanths. It is very important to remove and clean the carburetor ,float bowl, main and idle jets and re-assemble.The air screw on the carb.should be turned out from seated possition 1 1/2 to 2 turns out.

If it were Honda, Kawasaki, or Suzuki I might be able to help you out, I've been adding all the starting engine numbers to my site at http://www.cyclechaos.com/wiki/Motorcycle_Wiki . But for Yamaha what you traditionally had to do to find this information was look on the Yamaha microfiche which is a tedious process.
