So I switched back to the pill and I am taking Ortho Tri-Cyclin Lo about 2 weeks ago ( I was using Nuva Ring for 2 years). For the past week or so I've had a heavy watery discharge. Very, very slighty odor, slight yellow tint....but it's quite heavy. I don't get it! I have an appointment with my GYNO but until then I was wondering if anybody had any quidance or suggestions. Could this just be hormones, from switching birth control methods? Thanks!

A yellow type discharge can mean a vaginal infection, such as gardnella or bacterial vaginosis. This kind of infection is sexually transmissible, so your partner should be treated as well if this is the diagnosis. You will need to see your doctor for confirmation and treatment.

I've been on the NuvaRing for about 6 months now and love it. Its nice not to need to remember to take a pill at the same time every day. I've taken the birth control pill for the last 10 years to regulate my period. Every pill is a little bit different and has various side effects. On the whole I haven't had any really bad experiences. You have to go to the gyn to get a yearly check-up and they'll write you a prescription for birth control then. You don't go monthly, just once a year unless you have any problems. I pay about $18 for a 3 months supply of Nuva Ring. Before that I was on Loestrin 24 and paid around $50 for a 3 month supply. But those numbers change a lot depending on your insurance. Definitely get on birth control if you're sexually active and not ready to be a mom.

Totally. Ortho-tri-cyclen lo is a low dose-pill, but even so, it contains significantly more synthetic estrogen and progesterone than the ring... this is just in order to compensate for your body, which simply excretes a lot of these drugs, as opposed to the ring, which puts them right where they need to be. A common side effect of higher estrogen levels is a wetter vagina, meaning heavier discharge.

What you have doesn't sound like an infection to me (which is not to say that you should cancel your gyn visit... it's always good to have a checkup). A slight yellow tint is not at all out of the common. Your body may produce less discharge as you grow accustomed to the pill, or you may have to get used to it while you are on this medication.

It could be anything from STD to your body adjusting. I used the Ortho Lo for about a year too but did not notice a change, I had switched from the reg Ortho. I'm sure its nothing serious. Also, you could have a yeast infection. Surely the dr. can tell you.

"FDA wonders if The Pill still works well: Federal advisors may vote on more stringent guidelines for birth control drugs; concerned about effectiveness."

By Aaron Smith, CNNMoney.com, staff writer

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- FDA advisors will consider on Tuesday and Wednesday if birth control drugs need more stringent guidelines for safety and effectiveness.

The FDA is concerned over the increase in pregnancies over the last 10 years among women participating in clinical trials for birth control drugs. The agency said this could be the result of inferior products, improper use, or other factors.

The outcome of these meetings could affect the 13 million-plus women and girls who take birth control pills in America, and the estimated $4 billion market for birth control drugs, dominated by Barr Pharmaceuticals (up $0.18 to $55.70, Charts), Watson Pharmaceuticals (up $0.05 to $26.60, Charts), Johnson & Johnson (down $0.88 to $66.30, Charts) and Wyeth (down $0.80 to $50.10, Charts).

Unlike other advisory meetings it is unclear whether the panel will vote or take any other action.

The advisors will focus on the continued study of drugs after they are approved and enter the market, the effectiveness of drugs, and whether their benefits outweigh their safety risks, according to FDA documents. Much of the discussion will probably center on the success and failure rate of birth control drugs. If the advisors vote, it would be considered by the agency, which follows the advice of its experts most of the time.

Panelists will consider the inclusion of smokers, overweight women, and women with a family history of strokes in clinical trials, as well as the role of non-U.S. studies in the American population, according to documents. Also, panelists will consider whether changes should be imposed on the kind of risk and benefit information that is included on a drug's label.
