Essentially I'm looking at reliability. It's been a well circulated though among people that when you buy a foreign car it's likely to last longer. Does this still hold true today? I'm looking to get a minivan however we are looking at the toyota siena and nissan quest. They are quite expensive. The american Grand Voyager is much cheaper. Why this price difference. Is this a precieved price hype or is there really a large difference?

Ford and Toyota are the only two "A" companies. There's really not much of an over all difference in reliability between American and Japanese cars as it varies between models. America has put out some pretty bad cars but so has Japan, while at the same time the both put out some really fanastic cars. If I had to set them apart from each other, I would say that japanese cars are more effecient and compact, where as american cars are safer and comfortable (more room/larger vehicles). Price difference, could just be the demand for american vehicles has dropped maybe?

American auto reliability has increased remarkably in the past five years. At this time American warranties meet or exceed most Japanese products. The price difference is a reflection of many factors, including perceived value (reliability) and foreign exchange rates. The Grand Voyager is actually American made but a German product of Daimler Benz. Many of the Honda and Toyota vans are Japanese designs made in the USA. So really when it all comes down to it, there is very little difference in the overall quality of the products.

American car companies need to charge less because the cars aren't shipped from all over the world. However, I would recommend the Toyota and most of their models last longer than any other car, aside from the Prius. However, you need to give them credit for the Prius because it is the most successful launch of a hybrid car to date. Anyway, Toyota cars have been around for a while, like the Geo Prism, which was actually a joint venture between GM and Toyota - the car has a Toyota engine.

One last thing to keep in mind: American cars are cheaper to fix and the cheapest of those is anything GM, like Chevrolet, GMC or Saturn. So, you need to decide which one to go with. Also, foreign cars have a higher gas mileage requirement than American cars do, so that could affect the price you pay now, and the price you pay later.

With a few well known exceptions all cars are built fairly well. The life span and dependability of any machine depend greatly on how it is used and maintained over the course of it's life. Take care of your car like it's the only one you will ever get. Wash and wax the paint. Check the air in the tires and look for signs or abnormal ware while your there. Stuff like this make a difference weather new or used. Follow the manufacturers recomendations for servicing the engine, trans brakes etc... Affiliate yourself with a good mechanic with whom you feel comfortable and can talk to and understand. I have been enjoying the same vehicle for the past 30 years. People stop me all the time to try and buy it from me on the street. It is it's own reward.

Toyota and Nissan are wll build and reliable cars. But Grand Voyager is good mpv too. The price don't means that American cars is worse than Japanese! Americans do their best!

Personally i work at a garage and i rarely ever have a Nissan Quest in the shop however we often get American vans and quite a few sienna's in my opinion the Nissan Quest is your best bet although the price is high the functionality of the interior and the sturdiness of the mechanical parts seem to hold up very well

Chrysler invented the minivan in 1984. There are literally millions of them on the road, some with well over 200k miles on them. If you take the proper maintenance precautions with one, you can drive it for a long time. If you buy a used one that has been abused, you could wind up spending a lot on repairs. The same could be said of the Toyota or Nissan, however.

If you know you are going to maintain it properly, and not drive it abusively, I would have no problems buying the Chrysler.

typically there is less maintenance on the Toyota's and Nissan's. In the long run they are actually cheaper b/c the resale value is much higher than the American vehicles.
