I'm trying to test what happens with an application I have running on my phone when the signal is lost. Does anyone know a way of blocking the signal to the phone so that the phone will be unable to make calls, send sms and download data.

Placing the phone in a faraday cage will do it. A metal biscuit tin will do or even wrapping it in aluminium foil

Not that I totally know of. Are you meaning that tone the phone makes for signal lost or dropped call? Then yes you go into the sound and in call settings or network settings and turn that tone on or off. As far as blocking signal or calls from going into or out of your phone you'd have to call your cell carrier and suspend service to your phone, pay any penalties for that and get a new phone with a new plan and maybe even a new carrier as far as I know. I don't think you can just at will turn your service on or off without the cell carrier doing it.
