This sweet little girl had a baby 3 weeks ago on thursday (1/25/07). Her skin seems fine and there's no bumps or bruises or rashes or any such thing (no mites, either, thank gods). She's losing a little hair on her rump, and she's lost a little weight. Is this normal in a lactating sow? Or should I up her vitamin C intake a bit more? (she gets a large handful of cilantro about once every other day,has water and timothy hay available at all times, and gets 8-in1 pellet mix)

Some female Guinea lose some hair after having babies. It is basically postpartum in mother Guinea Pigs. Perfectly normal for her to lose hair, she will grow back her hair after the babies are about 6 weeks old. Though keep an eye on her cause the stress of the birth may cause mites.

Start with upping the Vitamin C for sure. Kale and Green peppers have a ton of it. You can also try Kiwi in small amounts, don't give too much because of the liquid content of it.

It is possible that she is chewing on her own hair as well or even the babies are. Most likely nothing to worry about, but keep on eye on her eating and behavior.

She isn't getting enough vitamin C and may have scurvy, but may also have hormonal problems from her pregnancy.

Guinea pigs should get 1 cup of vegetables per day, per guinea pig in order to meet their vitamin C needs. Check out the diet section at http://www.guinealynx.info for fruit and veggie ideas.

I may be wrong on this, so you may want to double check with some guinea pig care sites...

I believe that she is actually pulling out some of her own hair to make a warmer nest to recover and spend time with her new young.

Upping the vit-c can't hurt though. I feed my pigs broccoli slaw, which consists of thin strips of broccoli stems, cabbage, red cabbage, and carrot. 4oz is 100% of a human's daily intake, so just a few nibbles is plenty for my pig.
