I don't think this is a reference to "The Wizard of Oz". I bel ieive it is a polite reference to the gay community in the theatre esp. when it was still illegal.

A "friend of Dorothy" was gay slang to refer to a gay man, without letting others know that you were talking about sexual orientation.

Some say it comes from Dorothy in the "Wizard of Oz" movie. Others say it comes from the writer Dorothy Parker. No one really knows. (The Oxford English Dictionary is in favor of the Oz theory.)

It is widely thought that the term comes from Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz, as the film became a gay cult classic.

Dorothy as in 'The wizard of oz' All her mates were camp as christmas so I guess it comes from that!
