No Cowher was. Sure Dungy or Lovie will get a ring BUT Cowher made it to two Super Bowls and 5 Championship games in the last 11 years, could say 6 AFC Championship Games if you go back 12 years. Dungy went to HOW many Confrence Championships?

this is a lot too early interior the season. The Colts would be choose on 2 issues, one: how properly they do interior the playoffs. 2: did they win the large Bowl. They do those 2 issues maybe, one large season does not make him greater powerful than Dungy because of the fact Dungy did it for 2 communities and over the direction of 12 or 13 years.

Dungy is very methodical and bright and did a great job at Tampa Bay and has used Manning very well in building this team. The Colts have been frustrated by bad breaks in the playoffs in the past couple of years (like the last minute win by the wild card Steelers last year). Dungy is like Parcells and Belichek in many ways, as they are all professional coaches who can build a team and a dynasty given a chance. That Dungy is having to put up with the race stuff "first coach in the SuperBowl" stuff is media hype (and race hype-I am sure Jess jackson and Al Sharpton wil lbe there) is demeaning to Coach Dungy. He is one of the game's great coaches and should be a hall of famer. He also seems like a solid guy too. To highlight race hints that blacks are incapable of this level of success when really we should just revel in Tony Dungy's success. Its demeaning otherwise. We don't say Cowher is a great white coach, to say Dungy is a great black coach is racist. The sports media spoons that stuff out and many people love it. Good job Coach Dungy!!

Mellen 197 should actually read the question (which read "other than Belichick...") before answering...
I think at least one of the best. If it were not for some unfortunate playoff games he would have been in the Super Bowl long ago. He probably should have beaten the Rams in 2000 with his Bucs squad (remember that oddball 11-6 loss in St. Louis?). It's hard to pick a single best coach, because circumstances can vary greatly, but I definitely think Dungy should rank as ONE OF the best ever.

As much as I like Dungy and as good as he is - Super Bowl victories and playoff victories would dictate that the man with no personality - Bill Bellicheck is the best coach in the (last 10 years).

Lovie Smith is a talent that has not yet been tapped. Lovie is the next Lombardi. He took the worst team in world history and brought them to the Superbowl. Lovie is a great American.

No, he hasn't won the big game yet and it took him this long to finally get there with the number 1 qb in the league as of now.

I would have to say so, class act and if I were an NFL player I would want to play for a guy like this. Total team guy, and great people skills. Sometimes I wonder if he put football too much over his family, and maybe his son would be alive today.
