i started catching for softball about 1 year ago and i luv it. i'm pretty good too (according to everybody else, including the other teams coaches and the umpire, but i don't think i'm all that great). anyway i play softball because it's fun, winning either comes or it doesn't. anyhoo (oh, i'm a 15 year old girl by the way), i started to have pain in my heels. at first i just shrugged it off, but when it got to be too much, i told somebody. the doctor said my achilles tendon is being strained, he said i could either quit catching or catch and just know it's gonna hurt. softball sign-ups are tomorrow and i don't know if i should put that i'm a catcher or second baseman (my other position).doc said there is a slight possibility that i could tear my tendon, but it's not very likely.he gave me some etretches to do, but they aren't working. i want to catch, but i don't want to hurt myself. what should i do, any advice?

i played softball for 14 years of my life, i have had many injuries that made it so i couldn't play the position i wanted to, (i was catcher for a couple seasons) i would say sign up as both. do your stretches, practice as a 2ND baseman and catcher, but DO NOT OVER DO IT. meaning don't catch for more than a 1/2 hour- hour every other day. catching is the toughest job on the field and it can really strain your whole body, don't play in games until you are ready, otherwise you will hurt yourself and you wont be able play at all for the rest of the season.
also you can also think of getting a personal softball trainer, they will give you great advice. or you can go to your closest collage and speak to the softball coach they usually have a little more experience than the HS coach.

good luck

well i catch too and ive never had pain in that tendon but i mean i am made of steel.

try icy hot: icy to dull the pain then hot to relax it away

and if that really doesnt work if the coaches really like you they wont hesitate to give you a spot somewhere else

so try icy hot

well for health reason why dont you sign up for both. talk to the coach and tell him what is going on. tell him that you would like to rotate between the two when you feel like your ankle is really hurting while being catcher. he should agree. if he doesnt then pick one that you feel more comfortable with.

you've got to think of your overall health. is softball that important to you? i mean you said that you were doing it for fun so why not sit this season out, do the stretches and come back next year?

why dont you wait until next year to try out? Give yourself time to heal and do the streaches. It would be better to wait rather than hurt yourself permantly and not be able to play again

definitely go for second baseman. tell your coach, too so that he or she will understand that you're changing up for health reasons.

if it hurts you then I would not do it, it could cause more damage in the long run
