Borealis means "north". The Aurora also occurs in the southern hemisphere where it is called the Aurora Australis - australis means "south". Particles in the solar wind are deflected by the earth's magnetic field towards the poles. These are seen as the aurora.

Aurora Borealis is formed when plasma from the sun is caught up in the magnetic field around the earths poles.
