this is a very good question and one of the most thought-provoking in a long, long while.
However, we must ask our elected officials WHY?"
I believe this issue should press on the American consciousness more than
(1) gay marriage, and
(2) what title former Pres. Clinton will use if Sen. Hillary is elected Pres. of the United States.

Because those people are typically not veterans. Real homeless veterans are practically chased down and drug into Outreach Centers run by the VA. The real problem your question demonstrates is the fact that there are so few people in our society that understand anything about military service that you are not able to spot the fake veterans. In addition - since veterans get more sympathy than your run of the mill substance abuser - the homeless advocates will inflate the numbers of homeless veterans in order to secure more funding. The next time you see somebody claiming to be a homeless veteran, I suggest that you find a _real_ veteran to talk to that person for a few minutes. 90% of the time the real veteran will out the other guy as a fraud. .

The condition of our Vietnam vets in this country is shameful. I read an article in US News & World Report about what is being done in Skid Row.
Homelessness is a chronic problem, and not entirely the fault of our government. Homeless people are difficult to serve, because of the mental issues involved.
And I support our troops. Try to be fair in your questions. This is a very complex issue.

I'm a veteran, I've been homeless but no one would have known at the time. My family never even found out until afterwards.
I got a job. Found a place to live and moved on with my life in a pretty short order. The only reason there are homeless people, regardless of veteran status or not, is because they fail to get a job and find a place to live like I did.
I never asked for handouts. I never got anything free from government. I wouldn't have accepted if someone had offered. I have pride.
I got myself where I was and I got myself back to where I wanted to be. It's called responsibility. If any homeless person really wants a job and a place to live then they can get it. I'm living proof.

If you "really" support the troops what are YOU doing? You know they are fighting for YOUR rights, YOUR life, you do don't you? How many have you stepped over, walked around, ignored, laughed at or criticized? You know it isn't due to somebody else that they are out there. Just like any other homeless person it is a choice, they chose to give up and quit. I respect people but not those who cannot respect themselves or take ownership. I feel nothing for people who cannot step up and do something for themselves and I will not help them, that is what the PC liberals are for.
Another young fool preparing himself to be yet another victimized misunderstood, free "thinker". Shut up jackass. And don't come back and lie to say you give them money and let them sleep in your bed, blah blah blah. No lies

Supporting a troop means while they are in the military. Amazingly stupid question. What employer supports a person after they leave? Oh but wait, OUR COUNTRY still gives medical to those who retire from military, better than any other career. And btw, I have been homeless. And it is a choice. You choose drugs/booze or to stay with some abusive man over going to a shelter. No one has to be homeless, they wont' swallow pride and go stay at shelter to take a shower and go look for job. They wont' swallow pride to work at McDonalds to earn a buck to pay rent. No, they are too good for that, they'd rather live on their own outdoors. But then you bleeding hearts pity them and try and say it's governments fault they are homeless. Wake up,,people need to be responsible for themselves rather than asking government to do everything for them..

Military service to the Govt. is a simple business arraingment. If you are a poor businessman in life you will also be a poor bussinessman through and after service in the military.
Once you are out of the military, you are basically on your own. You need to use the survival skills learned in combat situations to survive in the real world. The fed govt will support you as long as you are providing them a service, after that, you are on your own. This has been the case since the American civil war.

They have chosen to live like that . Drinking using drugs and living on the street because they can not get clean and go to work 40 hours a week .Most of them have no skill except cleaning weapons and killing people . They are stupid people for not assimilating into the economic culture of this nation . You have to wake up drink some coffee and head into work monday thru friday collect a check and pay your bills .
They chose not to work like the rest of us have to to survive . Besides living on the streets in America is better then most people have it around the world .Some one else will cook and serve you food at a soup kitchen or mission and if you start praying and get off drugs the lord will provide .
Tough love is what America is showing by leaving them on the streets .
We all know about tough love . It works to save those who are willing to make the effort .
The rest are just bums and deserve nothing not even my pity .

Believe it or not, supporting our troops has nothing to do with the homeless populations. A good majority of homeless people are homeless because they choose to be. Its not that they are any less of a person for it, its just how they choose to live thier lives. Somewhere along the way, the idea of a 'normal' homelife became construed to mean that being homeless was bad.

What does "supporting the troops" have to do with homeless veterans? Believe it or not, serving a few years in the military does not relieve a person of the responsibility to look after himself the rest of his life.
