Just started 2 days ago. outside temp in the 30's with about 40% humidity. When I turn on the heat, set at 72*, the whole interior fogs up and I have to run the defrost mode to clear the windows. Any ideas as to what's going on and how much to fix?
Thanks

The first answer by Gin & Juice is accurate, but it's not the only answer.

If your heater core is leaking [it's the gizmo under the dash that brings in the hot coolant from the engine to warm you], then you will have a sweet smell on the inside of the car, and all of the windows will fog up, *especially* when you're trying to defrost them.

Alternately, check your "RECIRCULATE" button on your climate control. If it's "on", you aren't getting any fresh air from outside, only the stale humid air you're exhaling, which causes all of the windows to fog up.

Try these suggestions before heading to a $hop.

I hope this helps :)

Sounds like a leaking heater core. Usually preceeded by a sweet smell. If you don't smell something sweet, a little like pancake syrup, it may be a VERY TINY leak that is dripping out under radiator pressure after you shut off the motor. The coolant vaporizes and fogs the windows.

Often if this is a heater core leak, the windows will get a strange heavy coating on the inside that is somewhat hard to wash off. Makes the windows seem a little hazy...

Usually a heater core leak will not show a noticable drop in coolant unless it is a huge leak. Maybe a drop in coolant of 1 inch after a month or two. I don't know about mercedes but almost all vehicles have the heater core inside the car and you often find larger heater core leaks dripping on the car floor inside near your feet.

i own a repair shop, and there are two things that will cause this to happen either you have leak in the car ,or it has a bad heater core in it that's leaking, any moisture in the car at all will draw right up to the glass and cause this to happen try checking the carpet and see if its wet or damp,if so you,ll need to dry it out,but you still have to find the source of the leak, feel on the passengers side of the car ,if the carpet is wet it may have a bad heater core or a leak coming from around the door or window in it,good luck,i hope this help,s.

That is normal if you do not run the a/c compressor.....the air gets very moist. Blow hot air on a cold window with your mouth, it will do the same thing. You can't do anything to fix it unless you have an a/c compressor button that you can turn on. Otherwise, keep defrosting......but don't listen to the novices that are about to give you a whole list of bogus stuff to replace, you will just be wasting your money.....GOOD LUCK!

maybe your car has alot of interior moisture or you heating system has a small leak in the heater core system .iwould check your antifreeze level first be going to a shop. if its low, look under your vehicle for a spot on the ground to help pinpoint the leak.
