Short of giving it a massage, how does one adjust the tension on a 1990's electric Singer sewing machine? I'm watching one on eBay; I'm just interested to know whether the problem is easily remedied or whether I'll have to have it professionally repaired.

If you are new to working with sewing machines, or new to adjusting the tension, I would take it to someone to adjust it. Having it adjusted correctly the first time will give you the feel of how it should be, so that on down the road you can learn to adjust it yourself. Once you learn it is not so difficult to adjust.

The tension makes all the difference in a good or bad stitch...........and in your frustration level of sewing. When the tension is off you have nothing but trouble. It can be tricky adjusting it............especially if both tensions are off -- upper and lower.

I don't know how much they charge to adjust tension, but I would call a sewing machine repair person. It may not cost a whole lot, and it would be well worth it to get it done right so you can use it with ease.

There should be a tension adjusting button on the front of your machine (don't know the specific model but you can trace the path of the thread back to the bobbin and it will be somewhere between that and the spool).

However, you also need to check the lower tension too. Sorry, two year old daughter preventing me from continuing. Email me if you need any more info.

Tension is a touchy subject with sewing machines....do you still have the guide book? if not, upper thread tension is adjusted by a dial - on the top of machine...possibly on the right side of it...with numbers on it...1 is LOOSE 10 is TIGHT....on the bobbin, here may be a small screw on the bobbin case...lefty LOOSE-y - righty TIGHTY...if there is no screw, there is no adjusting bobbin tension...good luck!
