there are 4 places available plus a play-off with the winner from Oceania section for the 2010 FIFA World Cup. as for the INDIA national team's chances, there is unlikely that they will qualify as the traditional powerhouse of Asia such as KOREA REPUBLIC, JAPAN, IRAN, SAUDI ARABIA, KUWAIT & CHINA PR are among the favourites to progress to the finals in 2010.

bear in mind that INDIA lose heavily to SAUDI ARABIA 7-0 in the recent 2007 Asian Cup qualifiers, so how can you expect INDIA to qualify for the next World Cup with the back of this heavy defeat?

hey buddy ,India will never qualify 4 the world cup in the near future.cos they once declined an offer from FIFA.Indians told them that they were unable to play with studs.this happened when India stunned France in an Olympic match, but lost 2-1.we freely got invitation without any qualification...its a dumb thing that Indians did.....if India had accepted that offer from FIFA, they would have become one of the top in the world cos that's the way Indians played then....

now there is no chance cos stronger nations from Asia like japan ,iran,korea,...S.Arabia are the likely ones...
remember India lost 7-0 to japan last year...hehehe...

The method as foongwk said is 4 teams plus a playoff with the remaining Oceania countries(Australia is no longer considered as part of Oceania for FIFA purposes)... As its unlikely a country like New Zealand, etc would beat any top 10 ranked Asian team... I would say Korea, Japan, Iran, China, Saudi Arabia are favorites to progess for the 2010 WC.
However I read this article from BBC a while back that argued that domestic football is as popular as cricket in India(surprisingly); however, there is not an adequate infrastructure for some highly talented Indians to develop. India's domestic league needs to improve and this is done through the development of an advanced infrastructure for sport(ie. optimal diet/nutrition, facilities, coaching, equipment)

Its sad but its true....
India can't qualify for Worldcup in near future.
It will take long time for India to qualify for world cup. And also cricket being given prominence among the youth its difficult for not only football but also other games also to gain popularity.

India can never qualify for any FIFA World Cup
Even if they do qualify in 2084 they would not get any sponsor to finance their tour and event

Small pleasures seem to turn you on.We should hang our heads that we have not even been able to qualify.I am sure that pretty soon, the same fate is awaiting the nation in Hockey where once upon a time we were reigning supreme. Are we a bunch of losers or are we! Have a Great Day.
