I have a program that might help you. The link is below. It is only $39.95 for 4 years on 1 vehicle. I love it. This is what I found out for you though.
1) Choke vacuum kick setting incorrect
2)Fast idle RPM incorrect
3)Fast idle cam index incorrect.
Remedies
1)Reset choke vacuum kick
2)Reset fast idle RPM
3)Reset fast idle cam
These are the things that I found that could be the prob. You can see this and more on how to rectify the issues and even help you keep track of your maintenance schedule.

It's likely a sensor or switch somewhere.

You don't indicate what year & make of car you have, but the mass majority of cars in the last 20 years have "electronic" transmissions that communicate with the engine. When you change gears, the engine & transmission communicate with each other, unlike older cars where the transmission simply does what you made it do.

If the engine & transmission aren't communicating properly, the engine won't know what to do and therefore will just shut off for your safety's sake.

Don't try modifying components on your car like some here have suggested - take it to a qualified mechanic [in situations like this, it's best to leave it to the *auto manufacturer* since they know the car up one side & down the other, unlike a general mechanic who is a jack of all trades -no offense as I use mechanics when & where applicable] and just get ready to pay some money for a proper diagnosis and repair. The dealership will let you know what they found out, and how much it will cost to repair it. You may get lucky and find out it's just a $25 switch or sensor that has gone bad. Along with the diagnostic fee and labor, you could get out the door for under $200.

In today's cars, you can't just go chopping things up yourself. You'll only make it worse.

Good luck~

What year and make is the vehicle? Could be mechanical or electronic depends on the year. If you can rev the motor it is not likely the converter. Converters plug and cause top end power loss. Usually they will still allow a car to run at idle.

If you have an automatic transmission it could be the lock up converter not unlocking. If it remains locked it is the same as a manual transmission stuck in gear.

i own a repair shop, and you need to take it to any auto zone store and let them scan it for free, and they can tell you if it has any bad sensors on it that might cause it to do this,,it has to have something that's causing this to happen,it may even need a new set of spark plugs in it,that will make it act like this also, but at least you,ll get a good idea of where to start with it without spending a lot of money on it,good luck,i hope this help,s.

It might be a brake problem, front disk piston may be siezed out, causing this. ack up the car and check all wheels for freedom of movement. If you've heard a squealing earlier that might be it or the emergency brake in engaed and stuck.
