Google has special programs called "Bots" that scour the Internet and build a huge database of all the websites that they find. This database is what gets searched when you look for something.

Some bots just go through the web randomly, others check out websites that have been submitted for review. Therefore, if you want your website listed in google, you submit it to them, and they put it in line for the Bots to look at.

The order of the search results is determined by popularity. Google keeps another database of search terms, and which websites are most popular under what search terms. Therefore a new website will probably be far down the list, because it hasn't had a chance to become popular yet.

Search engines index all available web-pages and the results of the index are kept on their own servers.

When you type in a search phrase the results are pulled up from the index. Most major search engines also cache web pages (keep a copy of them).

No. This would be impossible, for one thing, but also illegal: There are a lot of files that weren't meant to be accessed by people or servers. Besides, a lot of servers aren't connected to the internet, so they wouldn't be accessable to Google.

In addition, many search engines obey to robots.txt, which allows web masters to stop search engines from indexing a particular server / folder.

All of the search engines have things called spiders. Spiders are a program that they run constantly that goes out and checks the content on websites, then indexes the content into their own system. So when you do a search, it simply looks to their file of results to return a result to you.
