Call or write to your State Bar Association. They will give you the latest information (the attorneys must have passed the bar and will have to register and have an "attorney number").

I'm an attorney and let me clarify one of the answers. Check with your state bar, not the American Bar Association. The ABA is voluntary and many lawyers are not members of the ABA. There's also a book called "Martindale-Hubbel" that rates lawyers on quality of their work and on separately on their ethics. The ratings are easy to read--they're just AV (high quality legal work and high ethical standards). The first letter is quality of legal work (A,B,C) and the "V" refers to ethical standards. It only rates attys who have practiced at least 5 years, however.

Its like the Whos Who reference to attorneys. I just used it today to find a lawyer for a friend. Good Luck

go to the American bar association. you can generally check the better business bureau to see if any complaints have been filed against a particular one.
