They weren't POWs, they were prisoners at Aushwitz concentration camp. They were an orchestra created by the Germans both to calm the prisoners and to provide entertainment for the Germans.

The leader of the orchestra was a niece of Gustav Mahler, named Fania Fenelon. She survived the war, and wrote a book about her experiences in the camp called, "Playing for Time." It was later turned into a motion picture staring Vanessa Redgrave.
