A virus scanner won't detect spam mail - they are two entirely separate things. However, some PC security products (eg Norton) may include a spam killer as part of the security package.
Most spam comes from people finding your email address from somewhere - eg on Yahoo or they buy email lists from companies you have given it to. Don't waste your time trying to track the spammers - it'll be a full time job and you'll still only make the most miniscule dent in the amount you get.
Just delete the spam and move on - i'm sure you have more important things to spend your time on!

We all get spam to our inbox. Sometimes way to much. However don't be tempted to click on that Unsubscribe button. All that does is confirm your email address and that you opened it. They have no intention on removing your email from their list. Just click on the spam button. You may want to tighten up your spam filters as well. Also consider creating a email account that you use to sign up for things, or need a email to confirm something. Most of the time that type of thing get a email sent to your account right away and you can be on the lookout for it. Bots crawl all over the web, forums, or any other place you may put in your email address, just looking for addresses to send spam to.

You blame your self. the workstation is inanimate and does purely what that's informed to do whether or no longer that's in errors. As for direct mail, whether that's on your inbox, click interior the container previous the sender, then click the direct mail button. that's going to be blocked out of your handle. If it is going into bulk, in strategies, familiar strategies, set the demonstrate messages to approximately 25. then you definately can right this moment test the senders to verify there is not any longer something there you like, click the "verify all" button, then click "delete." long previous with 2 mouse clicks.

short answer your ISP as they have a badly configured server.
tracing a spammer is not advised.
The only real way to be spam free is set up your own mail server like i have done. and can i just say my family email server has only been online around 30 - 40 days approximately and since configuring it correctly (with no help from outside sources) just beginers luck, my server has not had one single item of spam email come in. (this did take a little trial and error to get right)
just incase any hackers or spammers are viewing this answer I will be like a good magician and not reveal my technique (settings).
however in short the server at your ISP is at fault. they have probably set the server to point to their domain name and not to localhost, the first step of many that helps keep a server spam free. it also helps to use dedicated mail filters. as well as stopping the catch all mail address.
i will not tell here what mail server i use but i find it damn good.
the ISPs around the world need to simply take the server off line for a few minutes and then go through the mail servers mail foolders to remove the mail that is not addressed to anyone. easy to do as there will be a load of .eml messages in the root folder of the mail servers. once removed you can then either with your customers permission or not go through the mail folders for each account and remove known spam.
once removed the server can be reconfigured and then restarted.
again i'm keeping this trick back until directlky asked for the informatiion by an ISP or server administrator.
which i plan to charge a fortune for (if i can get a way with charging).
but in answer to your question attempting to trace the spammers could lead you to get hundreds more junk mail in your in box. so your isp should be informed of the spam mail and then it can be errased.
all a server administratotr has to do is spend a few minutes searching the server for common phrases in the mail folders. ok an administrator may come accross personal information while doing so. but a small price to pay if we can eliminate spam to a bare minimum.
but according to a recent TV news report i saw most of the spam can be traced to spanish home computers that are infected unwittingly (alleged) with spamming programms etc.
So no more holidays to spain untill they have secured there computers and we get a cleaner internet without the junk mail that clogs up our inbox and uses up precious usage allowance on our broadband lines.
it is about time that law enforcement took spam mail more seriously. it is theft! ievery message uses a few Bytes or KB of our broadband usage allowance. why should we have to pay for the junk mail. all junk mail we get should be reported to our ISPs and we should all demand that amount of allowance back the following month for example.
running your scanner is not enough. you need to update the definitions file as soon as they become available. so check for new definition (updates) every few hours.
also report any mail that is spam that our filter missed or let through to spam@yourmalwarescannersdomainhere.ext
phishing@same adrress, but your program will tell you what to do.
however if you are using the freeware scanners then the chances are they are responsible for your infections that they can not clean up.
try doing an onlinescan at http://housecall.trendmicro.com now let the scanner run but do not browse away from the scan at any point until the scan has ccompleted.
once it has almost completed it will prompt you with a message about what it found on your system, alow it to clean what it can and delete the uncleanable.
repeat the scan, again clean and or delete repeat the process until your system reports as clean.
now install the pc-cillin internet security suite trial available from the trendmicro.com site.
install it and set it to the maximum level of protection.
and you are half way there. there is more you need to do but i'm tired and i have a head ache so i'm going to close this answer now.
any further info on this matter email me. or see my holding page on my server http://www.garylsmith1973.homeip.net
the page is just a temporary page, but it outlines and lists what you need to do to get your self a simple webserver that includes mail and FTP up and running.
though it does not go in to how to secure your site, you can email me for more information on that should you wish.
good luck. and remember no scanner is any good unless it is updated at least once a day as new threats are found.
the beauty of the trendmicro product is they put out updates as soon as they are available often ths can mean an update hourly or two. whereas norton and others often wait atleast a week or more before providing new updates.

Viruses are completely irrelavent. You get spam because you sign up for stuff on web sites. It very rarely comes from viruses and your isp would never sell your email address.
