No matter what anyone on here believes about privacy, there's alot going on in the world today and depending on your children's age you need to be careful with them on the net. You should discuss why you want the password to the account as well as monitor or list the sites they are allowed to access. However, kids will find ways around everything, so if this method of being truthful and direct does not work, simply purchase a key stroke recorder that easily captures everything that is typed. Set it up some pleace where an alternate email address is required. Use yoru own. Keep the password. If she changes it you can get it back by requesting it to be sent to primary account. Also some carriers have parental settings where the parent has access to the childrens accounts. I think AOL did this when I used them but not entirely sure as mine was too young for email then.

If you are worried about what your daughter is doing online, don't let her go online. Be a real parent and step up to the plate, otherwise give in and leave her alone. Try raising her correctly and teach her right from wrong instead of just catching her when she's doing something you don't like. Simply telling her what's right and wrong isnt' enough, you have to have dialogue with her, get to know her instead of getting to spy on her. If she could trust you then you should be able to trust her. Spying is only going to create an atmosphere of mistrust and she will always be trying to get around any "protections" you impose.

Tell her you will need to monitor her account and ask for her password. That is the only fair way. However, know that many free accounts are available and you can't possibly worry about them all. Instead, improve your relationship with her so she will talk to you more.

I would go with what mom2laf said. I also want to say that I commend you for caring enough to monitor your daughters account.I've seen too many parents who don't do that, when I think they should. Sometimes people just don't realize how unsafe the internet can be. Good for you.
