I have just started learning to play the bass guitar. I am getting water blisters on the flats of my fingers instead of the ends of them,[fretting hand]. Am I doing this wrong, or does this happen since bass strings are bigger. I don't want to start off wrong, but it seems easier this way. The blisters are not in the middle of the flat of my finger, but just below tips of fingers.

It's normal. Mostly because the bass strings are very rough. Be cautious about those blisters and give them a little time to heal. If you get blood blisters, make sure you clean them and keep them clean. I got an infection from that and required antibiotics to get rid of it. So be careful. After a few more weeks you'll be toughned up enough that it won't be nearly as painful.

Good luck and keep up the good work!

Nope, that's where they should be. Ultimately, you'll probably wind up moving more toward the fingertips as you become more comfortable with playing. You'll wind up having calluses on all 10 fingers...

u didn't say which hand is getting the blisters ... i am assuming it is the right hand (picking hand) .... you really just have to tough it out until callouses develop .... and STOP PLAYING before the blisters develop or you'll just continue that cycle

the flats just need to develop to the point where your fingers are bent enough to use the tip which will callus as well.
