You'll want to have a thermometer. Doesn't really matter what kind.
Normal oral body temp is 98.6.
Normal underarm temp is 97.7.
Normal rectal temp is 99.6

I would get a thermometer and have it handy, i had a rectal thermometer as well as one that was like a pacifier, but it was hard to get my daughter to keep in in her mouth long enough for a reading, so a rectal is the way to go, and the only time i checked my daughters temp is if she felt hot or i could tell she didn't seem herself, and a babies temp can be a little higher than an adults and still be normal. Don't listen to some peoples rude answers, it is hard to remember everything you need for the baby. Good Luck!

Yes, I think you should get a thermometer. I liked the ear thermometers, just because it is easier. You can ask your pediatrician which one she would recommend. For the ear thermometer there is a choice to take the temp of an adult or a child/baby. I'm not sure if the avg. temp. is different from adults. But, that would be mentioned in the directions of any thermometer that you by. Congrats...on the baby, and best wishes.

Definitely you need a thermometer. I use an ear one - Terumo. This brand is commonly used by doctors in my country. I find it quite accurate.
The thermometer is just to confirm what you suspect whenever you felt that the baby is feverish. Anything above 37.3 degrees is fever. Dun let the temp hit 40 degrees. that is high fever and the only way to bring it down if Panadol syrup doesn't work when fever hits 38 degrees, you have to start on Ibufen.
The ear thermometer is easier to use. You will master it after a few tries.

Yes it is useful to get a thermometer. The special baby ones are softer, and tell the temperature faster. But they are not necessary. Don't get a gadget like for example a sticker thermometer that you stick on the forehead: they are not accurate.
The normal temperature is the same as an adult. You will want to check their temperature when you think they may be sick. The most accurate temperature is the rectal.

YES! NEWBORNS NEED A THERMOMETER AND THE PHARMACY WILL TELL YOU WHICH, IS WHICH YES! THERES A DIFFERENT ONE CAUSE THIS ONE HAS TO GO UNDER THERE LITTLE ARM OR ANALLY ESPECIALLY IF THEY ARE SICK , ALWAYS HAVE ONE ON HAND! AND KEEP THE BABIES THERM. SEPERATE! AND WHEN THEY ARE SICK I WOULD CHECK IT EVERY FEW HOURS TO BE SAFE! CAUSE MY DAUGHTER HAD A FEVERILLE SEIZURE, I DIDNT EVEN KNOW THAT SHE WAS SICK UNTIL SHE STARTED JERKING ALL AROUND WOW! THAT WAS REALLY SCARY CAUSE KIDS CAN'T GET REALLY REALLY HOT BECAUSE THEY COULD HAVE A SEZIURE! SEE SO THAT'S WHY I THINK ITS VERY IMPORTANT TO HAVE IT CHEKED OFTEN SORRY I FORGOT WHAT THE NUMBER WAS THATS NORMAL BUT USUALLY THERES A LIL CHART INSIDE THE PACKAGE THAT TELLS YOU WHATS NORMAL, OR YOU CAN ALWAYS CALL A PHARMACY AND ASK THEM OR A EMERGENCY HOSPITAL AND THEY TOO WILL TELL YOU WHEN YOU SHOULD TAKE THE BABIE IN OR NOT BY HOW HI. BY HOPE I HELPED.

YES you will need an "RECTAL" thermometer, for when the baby gets sick, the EAR ones are NOT accurate, and actually the baby's fight it off more than the rectal themometer. When you bring the baby to the d Dr. for an exam, while they are sick, the Dr will ask you what the baby's temp. was/is, and he will also ask, how you took the temp., They (Dr.'s) say that "Rectal" is the most acurate. Also most important is that baby's can take a very high temperature, my little guy hit 105* F one night, YIKES that would kill an adult !
*** IMPORTANT-----> If the baby's temperature hits 106*F It is time to get them to the EMERGENCY ROOM RIGHT AWAY !!!!! THAT'S WHAT THE DOC SAID, NOT ME !
Good luck, and yey for Poopy diapers !

Having a thermometer on hand is a very good idea. They make several different kinds and any of them should work(except for maybe the one in the ear...babies canals are not big enough so it will not give an accurate reading)
Normal body temperature ranges for different people...the only way to tell is take their body temp several times(while not sick) to get your normal body temp.(ex. mine is 97.2 and my youngest daughter is 96.8)
You don't really need to check their temp unless they feel feverish to you.

Yes, they need a rectal one. It has a round ball on the end of it. You put it in their behind. With this type of thermometer the temperature will be higher by about a degree. If they feel warm to the touch then you should take their temperature.

They don't really need one as you can generally tell when a baby has a fever by their skin tone and feel as well as their fontanelle ( the soft spot on their head). However having one cannot hurt and if it makes you feel better then it can only be a good thing. A ear or other electronic thermometre is the easiest kind and more accurate for a baby as well. Good luck with the new baby
