A farmer needs to fence a rectangular piece of land. She wants the length of the field to be 80 ft. longer than the width. Ifshe has 1080 ft. of fencing material,what would the length and the width of the field be?

x is the width of the field. x+80 is the length. Your formula is therefore x+x+x+80+x+80 (or 4x+160)=1080.

4x+160=1080.
4x=920

divide 920 by 4 and you have your width. Add 80 to that and you have your width.

Perimeter = 2length + 2width.

1080 = 2(width+80) +2width
1080 = 2width + 160 + 2width = 4width + 160

920 = 4width
230 = width

length = 230 + 80 = 310
