Run Faster

I was a sprinter in high school and I remember a few things. I hope these will help:
1. Hit the weight room. Try to take off excess body fat and get stronger. Don't over do it and get bulky...just tone.
2. Refine your start. Oftentimes, that will make or break your race. Make sure that you are not standing stright up in the air when the gun goes off. You waste precious hundreths and tenths of seconds. Your start should be almost like an outward leap, as you stay close to the ground and as you gain your speed, you gradually stand up. Figure out which foot is your 'power foot'. Adjust your blocks and make sure that's the first foot you plant. (I'm sorry that sounds funny...I've never had to put this in word form before. I hope this makes sense).
3. When you run, do not make fists. Making a fist tightens your arm muscles, which tightens your chest muscles, which in turn makes your lungs work harder. Keep your hands open. You will see some of the best sprinters in the world do this. Similarly, relax as you run. Don't clench your teeth. It tightens your neck muscles...you know the rest. Sprinting should be smooth and fluid.
4. Pick up your feet. Try not to run flat-footed. It takes your body more time and energy to pick your feet up if you run that way. Try to run more or less on the balls of your feet.
5. If possible, train with long-distance sprinters a few times per week. Join in with those who run the 200 or 400. Keeping pace with them will make your 100 look like a 25.

I hope all this info helps. Good luck!
