The silica soaks up the moisture in the container so that the product is not affected by excess moisture in the air surrounding the package. It is a precautionary measure for safe transportation and storage. Silica can be used almost everywhere you find a damp atmosphere to help soak up the moisture.

The silica absorbs moisture and keeps your shoes, or whatever it's packed with, dry until the container is opened. After that it has limited use, depending on the room or space the silicon protected item is stored/kept. Unless you're going to close the container immediately, such as one might do for vitamins or other such things, it's best to dispose of silica packages immediately, and safely away from children, who are prone to eat anything.

Silica sack is used to absorb moisture. If it was not in there, you would have a perfect breeding ground for mold (dark, damp and food source). You can dispose of it once you take the shoes out of the box.

Absorbs moisture, prevents mold.

Imagine if you will the sneakers (or anything else packed similarly) sitting in a warehouse in say Florida for a couple of months during the summer before arriving on the shelf of you local (or internet) shoe retailer.

I think those warning labels are for the same people that might be tempted to use their hairdryer in the bathtub. (Really, my hairdryer has a diagram of a woman using a hairdryer in a bathtub with a line through it. "Do not use in water," it says) Oy. Incidentally, I like to use the silica gel packets in my purse/car to absorb condensation and unpleasant smells.

To prevent dampness...it is packed in with candy, shoes, purses, lots of stuff. Don't eat it and make sure that your kids and animals don't get into it either!
