I want to book a really good hotel but prefer to go on others personal recommendation if possible. If any of you guys have stayed in any of the top Edinburgh hotels, please let me know what you thought of them?

Well, it really depends on your personal taste, but if you can get a room, there's nothing that beats The Witchery in my opinion. My husband and I stayed in The Inner Sanctum suite and spent ages reading the comments of people who've stayed there like Jack Nicholson. When you arrive, there are hundreds of candles and an open fire lit in your rooms. There was a Jacobite soldier's jacket casually slung over a balustrade, as if he'd just left it there! The bed is a lavish four-poster with velvet drapes, and the bathroom has a bath you could probably get four or five people in - if that's your thing! Although it has all the mod-cons of dvd player and cd system, they are hidden away in cabinets so as not to spoil the historical appeal. It was romantic, Gothic and unusual, and I loved it. The restaurant is again, totally candlelit, and the food is gorgeous. It's expensive, but memorable in a way few hotels are. You need to book well in advance though!

If you've got to ask that question, can you afford it? Don't dig yourself into a large hole.

The Caledonian at the West End of Princes Street is the top hotel, followed by the Royal British which is universally referred as the North British at the East End of Princes Street. But be prepared for enormous charges and check carefully beforehand.

Without doubt The Balmoral!

I've stayed there twice and it's was worth every penny spent. The service is sublime and they really are friendly and helpful. I loved the atmosphere there, it made me feel really great.

The North British - It's outside Edinburgh station. It has a real old fashioned quality to it. Makes you feel super posh and like you're stepping back in time...
