My daughter had 2 fantail goldfish, except we had no idea if they were male or female. She was really hoping to get some babies. So, this morning, I found one of them dead. She is hoping that with our replacement fish that we get this afternoon, we will have a breeding pair. Except, I have no idea what to look for if they do actually breed this time. I got some info from another yahoo answer on how to distiguish the sex of the fish (this looks too hard for me, so I think it will just have to be a matter of luck).... but I am wondering how the whole "birth" will occur if we luck out with 1 male and 1 female this time.

Hey 7th grader - you better keep going in school - you little brat. I have an IQ of 144 and went to Boston University - how about you?!?

Most fish lay eggs.
Some are "egg layers"
Some are "live bearers" (like guppies and sword tails)

all fish except livebearers(giving birth to live babies) lay eggs. mollies, platies, swordtails, and guppies are livebearers there are also mouth brooders and others but to answer your question a goldfish lays eggs. but goldfish dont breed in aquariums they need cold weather then warming back up to make them breed.

They lay eggs, then they promptly begin to eat every eggs within sight. If you want to breed I suggest you get two tanks. One for spawning and the other to move the parents into. The parent's tank should be 30+ gallons as these are goldfish. Goldfish do not form pairs, they just breed when ready. The males get tubercles on their gills when they are ready to breed. If these fish are under 3-4 inches there will most likely be no breeding, if you want babies you will have to get adults.

Hehe I got a very interesting mental image when I read your question. The answer to your question is no. Not only is it physically impossible, but if you were able to get them to mate, no viable offspring would ever be produced. The reason for this is they are different species of animal. The definition for species is: (biology) taxonomic group whose members can interbreed If the animals are not of the same species, then they cannot interbreed. Hence no dog/cat hybrids, no penguin/dog, no human/porcupine hybrids.
