Brush off any dry mud with a stiff brush. Get some warm water and a bar of soap - dip the soap in the water, rub over the trainers and scrub with a nailbrush dipped in water. Wipe with a clean damp cloth and when dry apply some trainer whitener to the canvas. You'll get this in most shoe shops.

Trying scrubbing them with a tooth brush or nail brush and a solution of biological washing detergent in warm water. The enzymes in the detergent should help lift the grime - then rinse under tepid running water. Stuff the shoes with paper (NOT newspaper, the print will come off) and leave them to dry in the airing cupboard. Ta da!

Ever heard of shoe whitener? It comes in a plastic bottle and has a sponge on the end of it. You simply push the sponge onto the shoe until the cream comes out and spread it over the shoe with thye sponge. Leave it to dry and voila you have a brand new looking shoe.
Note: if the shoe has mud on it, simply leave it to dry and brush it off before applying the whitener. good luck!

Apart from proprietary cleaners available in supermarkets or shoe shops, rubbing them with toothpaste and then washing that off helps.
