As far as I understand it, the STIG is actually a couple of people who used to work in racing, rather than an ex-racing star. It is most likely that they were test drivers for a main team and not a principal racer.

My beleif is that it's Nigel Mansell...
I had thought it was Hill for a while, until he actually appeared on the show... but that might have just have been to throw us off the scent.
I think only the top gear people know, and they keep it a big secret themselves.
My money would be on Mansell though.

Not sure who it is now but it used to be Perry McCarthy an F1 test driver.
Top Gear rocks and is back at 8 on sunday.
