I'm looking to buy my nephew a comic book for his birthday. When I was a kid, there were no problems finding them, today they all seem to be aimed at adults or adolescents. Is there anything anyone can recommend?

Go onto Amazon / Play.com and look up

ESSENTIAL SPIDER-MAN
ESSENTIAL FANTASTIC FOUR
ESSENTIAL X-MEN
ESSENTIAL AVENGERS
ESSENTIAL IRON MAN
ESSENTIAL CAPTAIN AMERICA

They are reprints of the origional comics. Each is about £7 - £8 and you get quite a lot for each book.

What BETTER place to start than with the origionals at the very start of their adventures?? !!

All the comic books that I used to know like DANDY--BEANO--COMIC CUTS--ROVER--DAN DARE have all seemed to disaappear from bookshops and newsagents and now the kids tend to watch childrens TV . You might be able get a comic book such as Popeye and Olive oyl also Dennis the Menace.

Garfield
Snoopy
Calvin & Hobbes
Astrix and Obliex
The Simpsons
Tin Tin

I used to read The Beano & The Dandy but they have changed it so much now and I think they are rubbish.

Get him something like erm.... maybe a film comic book of "Castle in the Sky" (no sex or anything its PG).

"Kikki's Delivery service" (caps from PG filmin a graphic novel)

Get some old annuals or comics from your days? Superman and super heroes like that but without the dark grim violent that are in the modern comics.

Marvel has released a "marvel adventures" line that consists of stories aimed at children. They dont have the adult themes or extrenuous dialoque and are usually self-contained stories.
I recommend those. They make them for most of the marvel heroes (marvel adventures: fantastic 4, marvel adventures:spiderman, marvel adventures: avengers, etc) They should have them at most comic shops and some bookstores.

try the old classics... asterix, tintin; they may seem old fashioned but are definitely a good start, boy friendly storylines and certainly more subtle than the sensory overload that available today for kids his age...
